Put out fire before it starts - trouble shooting ...
Take respect approach
1. Resisting the Course:
sell the course at beginning - talk about the benefits in real world
sell the ways for future applications

take mastery to the next level - tie to real world - be the best to beat out the best in competition
3. Claim classroom space
walk around the room - make your presence known
cell phone statement in course outline - can use or cannot use - write down many times in course outline
autonomy is important

do not use any physical struggles
5. Consequences
breaking rules - consequences
establish rules, make them clear, remind students
Assignment 3 Inquiry Presentations Part 1
Mahi - Sewing a Top
I love that Mahi found a software to make a pattern! Make your own, you can design your own clothes.
I would have loved to see the unfinished shirt in class. What could have been added to enhance the presentation may be a demonstration of hand stitching in front of the class.
Amanda - Making Biscuits
I love that Amanda related her emotional experience with her students' emotions (fear). Well done! Lovely movie! Excellent learning process - understands better how her students feel about learning.
I would not change anything in the presentation - I thought it to be complete.
Jerrylynn - Basic Photography
Good job on giving yourself a timeline/event for learning photography. (Friend's bridal shower)
I noticed that the learning was all trial and error - maybe Jerrylynn may have benefited from a photography class/talking to a professional photographer.
Melinda and Kelly - Perogies
Love the picture stories - good way to keep audience interested in your presentation. (photo voice)
Although you did mention this in the presentation, I would have liked to have known about the difference with rice flour, of gluten-free flour - since many people are allergic to gluten. Will the recipe be as successful? Would you have to change some of the steps?
Sajjad - MS Access Learning
Love the slides - a lot of work went into the learning process.
Maybe a comparison of Access with your statistical analysis software could have enhanced the presentation. Now that you learned about Access, do you prefer it over your other software?
Cara - Power point presentation for a Bathroom Reno
Well done! Wonderful power point! I see that you found many of the features.
My only comment is that too many transitions (activities) makes it difficult to keep watching. I feel that the presentation gets too busy. But, you learned a lot!
Assignment 3 Inquiry Presentations Part 2
Husam - Samsung S4
Good comparison of type of phone with teaching style - does a person keep upgrading throughout life?
Which is more important - learning or documenting? Depending on your job, some require ALOT of documentation, like software developing. The little things that we learn in life, some things do not need documenting - like learning how to do change a baby's diaper.
Darcy - How to Make a Website
Wonderful comparison chart, Darcy! Your website looks wonderful!
Is it possible to pay someone to build and upkeep the website?
Jenna S - Button Baby Booties
Excellent problem solving with the red yarn. Booties look great - well done Jenna!
Did you try looking through a crochet pattern book for beginners?
Jenna B - Income Taxes
Wonderful presentation - great graphics. Great learning experience! I like the comparison between online and "old school" manual calculations.
I would not change a thing in your presentation.
Cynthia - Wine Making
I love all the extras you added to your presentation - website links, videos. I see that you were questioning your method from the early stages :-(
People are afraid to make mistakes - EMBRACE THEM AND CONTINUE TO LEARN.
Shauna - Create Wavy Hair
Wonderful Prezi! Good photos added to show your learning process.
Suggestions: less writing per circle in presentation - otherwise it is daunting to read.
Vanessa - Playing Guitar
I like that you thought to use books to learn. The A chord is VERY difficult to play - good on you for keep trying.
I would have liked to of heard a sample strumming.
Leonard - Arduino /Grafting
Interesting topic, Leonard! I like that you knew when you reached your end point. Perhaps you can return to this topic when you have more spare time.
Grafting - I hope you enjoy the fruits of your labour!
Classroom Management
Mahi and I ended up sharing our thoughts on her blog because of "google hangout" issues. classroom management
After reading her trials and tribulations, I believe that every instructor enforces a respectful classroom in some manor. I make reference to the College's policies pertaining to Student Rights and Responsibilities on the course outlines.
The major issue I have in the classroom is to keep the students from chatting during the lectures. I can quiet the conversation when I stand beside the disruptive students, but I find myself having to do it too often. Once I had to remind the whole class about the respectful classroom policy; that includes preventing other students from learning when side chatter interferes with the lecture. That speech quieted the conversations for that day's lecture, but the students went back to their old habits shortly thereafter. In retrospect, I should enforce more consequences to the repeat offenders. Perhaps I can allocate a mark for professionalism in the classroom.
Assignment #7 - Student Learning Approaches Part 1
Husam -
Excellent photos, well organized, easy to follow your train of thought - great use of simulation to build confidence for the student
Have fun in China! No suggestions for improvement - well done!
Cynthia -
Beautiful Prezi template - I like the way you make learning real - inspiring quote from John Dewey.
No suggestions for improvement - well done!
Jerrylynn -
Good idea to replace white board with a Lucid Chart - it keeps the students' attention on the task.
Do you know of any dissection simulation software to use instead of using a journal?
Eating while looking at diseased tissues may not be a good idea - hopefully your students have a strong stomach ;-)
Vanessa -
Well presented, Vanessa! I like the journal idea, it is a wonderful reflection on the task, which leads to a better learner understanding.
Slides are a little too crowded with words, makes it difficult to read/follow along.
Sajjad -
Wonderful Prezi! Well done for your first time. Information is very complete, well thought out, and easy to follow-along.
No suggestions for improvement - well done!
Darcy -
Very colourful powerpoint! I love the idea of role-playing for mock interviews. I like your take on BOYDevice - a nice way to have students become more independent in their learning.
The only thing I could suggest is to make the secondary level on your presentation a little darker. The font is too faint, making it difficult to read for people my age with bad eyesight ;D
Assignment #7 - Student Learning Approaches Part 2
Jenna S -
Wonderful Prezi! Love the layout and it is well organized! I value customer service and appreciate the professionalism shown. Role play is a wonderful way to practice.
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Kelly -
Interesting approach to the role play - incorporating creativity using 'Ellen' interview. All approaches are well thought out - good job, Kelly!
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Amanda -
Well done, Amanda! I like how you've shared your students' comments on the course - ultimately, the student's learning is the instructor's measuring stick!
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Jenna B -
Well done, Jenna! I like the way you incorporate the learning approach with the practical skills in lab - a melding of theory and practice.
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Shauna -
I like the Webquest idea - where the student opens their own business. Running their own business will certainly require a lot of work - best that they understand how much work is involved before they commit themselves.
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Cara -
Great power point, Cara! Well thought out approaches, lots of information provided.
Well done, but for the presentation, I think it would easier for the audience to read the slides if they were less crowded. Less info makes more of an impact ;-D
Melinda -
Presentation was well organized and easy to follow along. Great ideas to your approaches, Melinda!
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
Len -
Len, nice touch to add i-cloud journals. Documentation is very important in the service industry, and this is a perfect way to implement more technology in the classroom.
Nothing to change in your presentation - well done!
