Assignment #2 blog
Group discussion on classroom environment;
Issue: Students arriving late after lunch break.
Solution: As per attendance policy I marked 7 out of 12 students late with no excuse which meant that they would be docked a half day of attendance.I verbalized they notation to the instructor who was teaching that class so the students there would hear, then I left the class. Once returning to class the following day the students brought up the issue and I informed them that being late was unacceptable. I then asked if I made my point and that they were to considered that as a warning. I then wiped the slate clean and stated that next time it will stick. So I used that situation to wake them up and make sure that they knew I was serious yet used than situation to show mercy. It worked.
We did not have time to discuss this issue and therefore no input from the other three participants.

Note to self:

Jeff; a movie star/director

One question to ask.
do you find that the more you look into using the green screen the more your imagination runs away with what you want or can do with it?

Comment; . I'm thinking that through the struggles you've had that they could enable you to sympathize with your students when they have similar issues.

Amanda knitting

One question to ask.
You were having trouble at the beginning. How do you think, through your experience, you can help your students when they ' hit the wall' and therefore assist them in overcoming?

Dan Meditation

One question to ask.
Once you were doing your research did you find one source over another that helped you and could you use any of those search techniques to assist your students?

Laurie Learn Learn in rrc

One question to ask.
Do you think that once you have learnt the learn system that in will make your system work easier for you and do you wish you had started this sooner.

Dorris Can I learn to play a violin

One question to ask.
Do you think that you will take up the violin after all this.
Comment:

Mitch; How to read and play guitar tabs

One question to ask.
Would you find it better to just learn tabs or also to learning notes as well? One thought is that there are different ways of learning that enable you to learn the subject. One way enables you to learn the subject only and another way may prepare you to be able to learn other subjects after you have learned the original subject.

Assignment #3 My link to my power point doc. My log building

I am familiar with power points so I decided to use a doc power point. I did not know if I put my power point on a USB if it would transfer to the RRC system and the google Doc is what we are learning to do so I might as well get out of my 20th century slump and use some of the technology to my advantage.

I am more of a visual learner so I decided to go mostly with videos. If I had pursued the book idea all I would have to do is buy one book and my six hours would be up. I used the google search engine on 'how to build a log building' and it brought up a lot of U-tube sites, which was right up my alley. It also brought up a lot of stuff that wasn't so helpful so it did require some amount of sifting, yet it was a lot easier than going to a library and searching through scads of books. I found that the sites weren't always consecutive and were often difficult to find videos that had multiple parts / series.

What I had done was find the original author and look up their specific site to find all series of their posts. That didn't always work out due to my understanding or lack of understanding of searching their site or their organizing their search feature within their site. Some sites were fine and others I gave up on. What I did find were that professional site, ie. sites that sold information, were more organized, easier to follow, had more complete information, typically had more to the point information, usually had some amount of free information and , of course had books or CD's to sell which at this time I am not pursuing.

The Non -professional sites were mostly not teaching sites and had a lot of filler video such as kids, coffee breaks and whatever nonsense that did not pertain to anything I needed to know. Most of the sites that were titled with ' how to' were beneficial to watch and each seemed to have something worthwhile to extract ideas from.

Over all the assignment went well. There is a lot more information out there that could be pursued and there was more information that I needed partially because I am not building a log house to live in just a storage/ ice skating warm up shack that doesn't need to meet very strict criteria. Some ideas came from this research that I might integrate into the project like a pull string system latch for the door or longer over hangs on the ends. Only time will tell. I don't know whether I will pursue this project but if I do I am certainly one step closer. The end.

Assignment # 4 Classroom Management link to my video blog of Child Driven Education.
I can't get this blog thing to work. I've created a new blog and can't put anything in it. When will this torture end.
My comments on the video.
Aside from the waiting for the video to constantly refresh I thought the studies done, and results, were surprising, yet not really. I can understand, though, that if the student is interested in the subject he/ she will go a long way to figure it out and that is basically what the study proved. Also when students collaborate together they are more likely to retain the information better, makes sense to me. I do think that in the Gateshead experiment you would need, and did have, all the students to be equally involved to keep the 76% average and you wouldn't keep the same results with every other similar experiment all the time in every part of the world. Or would you?. Yet it would probably be very similar if all students participate equally. I wonder what would happen if we did this experiment in our own schools. Would we get the same results? I suspect that we wouldn't get full participation and that the results would be different, but I could be wrong.
Very interesting study.

Note to self:
zunal.com is a guided internet search used to guide the students to research their own learning.
should check out. there might be something here for trades. ( I think)
Graphic organizers - is a brainstorming tool - where you would use ideas on a flip chart or something like mind mup - can be used as an ice-breaker or as a learning tool.

Jennifer Project Connoli (vegan)

One question to ask.; You had issues with making the dough. Could you have used the world wide web to find out what you did wrong and how to correct it?
Constructive criticism; You talked of Cannoli, I realized that it was some sort of food yet not a clue as to what it is until later.
I did like how you were attuned to the class. Way to go.

Trio; Andrea, Maggie F and Jason : cooking with Jason sea food(using animota clip)

One question to ask.Who did you notice was the less experienced and what did you do about it?

Comment: It looked like you had done a lot of research.

Rick; social media

One question to ask; You've learned so much. When does it end for you?
Comment; You made it fun. I like how you've covered the criteria of presenting how you've learned.

Tom; Make a video

One question to ask; How did you find creating the transitions and how well did the helps guide you through it?
Constructive criticism; I found that the video did not have to be that long being that you were teaching about how you learned yet you still kept it within the time limit so maybe it didn't matter.

Allen: Audio Visual

One question to ask; Could you not utilize other church techs even though they use different equipment.
Comment; I thought there wasn't a lot of info that you shared? I felt like it stopped short.

Danh; Mod .a paintball gun.

One question to ask; Did you try firing the gun before you did the modification. Buying something on eBay may not be functioning properly and the problem could have been there from the beginning. Can pre-checking the function also apply to instructing others?

Assignment #5 comments on the resources page links

Blogs in higher education:
I think that she is on the right track with the pro's and con's. I have students who do not have internet access nor are they internet savvy. So when you give them internet assignments such as Google docs or blogs then they are struggling with the system and can't apply themselves to the required tasks. On track with that one of the blogs was commenting that these internet tools do have their place and we need to use them for the appropriate courses. Are blogs a teaching tool or are they a means of sharing information for as was mentioned on one of the con's that the information is not always accurate and that can be a challenge for a teacher to monitor as a teaching tool yet not as crucial if it is used only as a place to share information. A bonus could be that it opens the topic to the world which could bring a lot of new information that otherwise would not make it into the discussion if only limited to the class.

Role Play Simulations to Promote Active Learning:
Role play has its place yet it is not the in all and end all approach. I was getting the impression that that the teacher would flip the class and do the role play in the classroom. Some of the problems I can see is that if the students have a lot of other classes of homework then one needs to be careful with what kind of workload is put on them. With consideration of other workloads and moderating lecture time role-playing time and flipping the class it could be a winning combination for the right subjects.

Student centered approaches in higher educational settings:
When it comes down to different student centered approaches it all depends on what needs to be learned. It;s highly unlikely that only one approach will work for all learning of any one subject. If a teacher is open to these options then s / he can utilize different approaches where they would meet the needs of the students best. Mixing things up enables the students to 'own' there own learning because they are more actively involved in their own learning.

Note to self:
Role play are simulations to promote active learning.
Role playing / debating / case studies
-student debates aloow collaboration
-class discussion for smaller class settings
-think - pair - share
-class game - to review class material
-videos

Dan

web-quest
hands on ie problem solving/ case study
Comment: CAN"T FIND HIS LINK to view ( MAR 06)

Laurie

Journal/ blog
1 Good idea- give them ideas /options that give them a start to the project.
2 role play- is a good hands on type of practical learning.
3 Simulation
Comment: Can you flip this idea. Other sites that cover scenarios that they could watch and therefore expose them to more situations.

Mitch

1 popplet The advantage could be that the students could ask questions that may not normally speak in class.
2 Webquest enables Instructor to post questions and students can do the search
3 Technology internet/ flipping the class, u tube
Comment: Using a video of their work is a tool to use that a student can see where they were wrong or right.

Jennifer

Comment: CAN"T ACCESS HIS SITE

Alan

1 co-operative learning; practical tasks -rebuilding equipment
2 Problem based learning; install parts to spec.
3 Scaffolding; modelled before student attempts to allow safe and proper install.
Comment: I liked your outcomes. The order of the scaffolding one could probably be re-arraigned by putting the third one of knowing what angles needed for each type of metal could probably be first.

Andrea;

1 search and find. Flipping the class - set goals for student then present to class
2 Case studies; Questions for student, --gather info wherever- present to class.
COMMENT; Some people can be good 'get er done' people yet are lousy leaders
3 Discovery learning; project related to work. 25 positive things about your work.
Excellence through passion.
Comment: Being positive goes a long way. When one allows themselves to dwell on the negative it can really drag you and often others down. That is something we can all try to maintain in our workplaces. A good attitude goes a long way toward an enjoyable work/ schooling experience.

Note to self:
Brainstorming is the student learning approach and a popplet is a tool used to do it.
Outcomes are to be the recipe so anyone else can come and teach it by looking at the outcome.
kahn academy is site to search that covers math. Could be good for my students.
Scffolding = show them first - do it together -- then let them do it.

3: forklift training, game on net
Comment: after flipping bring up questions for or from the students

Amanda: transit

1: Scaffolding: Model the skill, suggested: video the student to help evaluation

Comment: can you flip the class with the videos. Well if the union will have an issue with that then the idea of doing it in class works too.
3: flipping the class for air brake test
Comment: Maybe a popplet would work to brainstorm as a class on things to look for while doing a brake test. I'm wondering if you had videos on site that employees could watch in the work place could be made available. One thing about the air brake tests is when you don't do them you loose it. Maybe the videos could be a good refresher or something.
