Situation:
One of the classroom management problems that keep coming up is attendance. Apprentices that are late can, and, usually do disrupt the class. Apprentices who miss a full day of class also effects the classroom environment by asking question on topics already covered. They also can end up monopolizing the instructors class time with requests for handouts and materials from the previous day.
Solution:
On the first day of classes Apprentices are orientated with the standard list of Red River College Policies including the attendance policy governed by Manitoba Apprenticeship. Apprentices are required by agreement to adhere to all College and Apprenticeship policies. Apprentices are informed by myself as well as by their Apprenticeship Training Coordinator at the start of each course that attendance will be taken throughout the day with discrepancies reported to Apprenticeship daily. Through my experience, I have found that this kind of regiment dramatically reduces, or even eliminates problems with attendance.
Blogs in higher education
What really stood out for me in reading this post was the when Anamaria said that “the fabrication and distribution of knowledge is no longer in the hands of one person, the teacher”. I have to agree, information can be found by a click of a mouse and knowledge can be gained by seeking out this information. Students are complex people and not all students learn the same. Some students lack direction or require more direction. Motivating some student to have an active role in the learning process using blogs sounds hard to achieve from my point of view.
Lifelong learning Learning does not stop when we leave High School or College. Most High School students choose a career path and acquire only the basic knowledge. In College, these students learn the technical terms and practical skills to start them off in their new chosen career. The Learning truly begins when one strives to achieve mastery of their craft. Lifelong learning is ongoing the pursuit of mastery and knowledge self-motivates the lifelong learner to find new information, new techniques and new ways to learn in today’s fast changing world. With each new installation techniques, or applied skill and technical advances mastery of one’s career never ends. Some employers understand the benefits to lifelong learning and encourage their employees to take advantage of training courses or seminars to assist them in their quest for mastery. The Canadian Government recognizes the economic impact and benefits of lifelong learning. Therefore, it has the lifelong learning Plan (LLP) which allows individuals to withdraw funds from their registered retirement savings to finance training or education for themselves. I came to a realization a long time ago, that the mastery of my skilled trade can never be mastered, as I continuously learn something new each day. http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/goc/llp.shtml
