1 Classroom Management
Situation:
Michelle L shared an example of a disruptive student situation with our group. One of her students tried to actively participate in classroom activities but her comments often made discussions drift away from the topic. Moreover, this student shared very personal information irrelevant to the topic, which made other people in the classroom feel very uncomfortable. This situation happens over and over again. After certain period of time, as soon as this student joined a discussion and started talking, the rest of the students expected the conflict situation to repeat, and consequently withdraw from the discussion. It seems that the student wants to change her behavior but does not understand when she has crossed the line.
Solution:
As Michelle stated, instructors spoke to the student in private and explained why her behavior causing the disturbance in the classroom.
The instructor does not want to discourage the student from participating in discussion by simply cutting her off. Our group came up with the following solution: the instructor and student can agree on a specific verbal or visual hint when it is time for the student to wrap up.
