Inquiry Presentation Reviews

Mahi:
  • Great idea to learn to sew! I really like how you walked through the process including intro and conclusion.
  • I think the font choices could have been slightly larger and more consistent to help your presentation read better

Wendy:
  • I enjoyed the analysis chart you did...showing ease, taste, cost and overall ratings
  • sexy pastry, not so sexy powerpoint. Perhaps Jazz up with colour, fonts, images (*not sure if all images loaded???)

Amanda:
  • I really enjoyed how you tied everything you were learning to how your students learn. It was really great. You are also great at interjecting additional info into your presentation...including relating to other presenters (happenings in the class)
  • Remember to bring jam...and clotted cream, its the absolute best

Jerrylynn:
  • I enjoyed that you learned by research and then translating or relating it to what you know...eye/camera
  • would be nice to have seen your images in a larger format

Melinda/Kelly:
  • great photography documentation. I've made perogies from scratch...and its lots of work!
  • may have been great to see it put into a video format
  • Keep an eye on distracting movements and the use of crutch words like "umm"

Sajjad:
  • Seems to be a very daunting task to learn
  • Seem to have way too many slides for the length of presentation. A little dry at times and presentation should be more focused

Cara:
  • Way to go to challenge yourself on something you've never done before
  • As your powerpoint skills develop, perhaps it will also be important to edit the "frivolous" items and elements

Day 2

Hussam:
  • I like your comment that the learning journey will allow you to learn much more than you expect/ are searching out to learn.
  • You seemed to have a lot of additional information that was not covered in your presentation. Perhaps having an outline to time each point of discussion will help you stay on task.

Darcy:

Jenna S:
  • I'm impressed you tackled that on your own with nothing but a "digital guide". Sewing/knitting is so tactile...I would need that demo.
  • I would suggests not to be afraid to seek help. I think people can be great resources...and very helpful when you encounter road blocks.

Jenna B:
  • interesting way to analyze your process vs your learning style
  • watch your language: "way more simpler"

Cynthia:
  • interesting comment.....procrastination is there to avoid fear
  • Perhaps rotate your video next time, so audience has a better view

Shauna:
  • Great that you have applied your own learning experiences to that of your students (ie: enough time to learn procedures)
  • I would suggest reducing the amount of words you have on your slides...seems to be too much. (key points can be more effective, with your verbal explanation. Watch for spelling errors "time to do other tings"-things

Vanessa
  • I enjoyed watching your process. Very thorough documentation.
  • Found it interesting that you were looking for affirmation (grandma style, as discussed in class).
  • Please try to keep your font size the same....at times its difficult to see because of the variable size.

Leonard
  • Way to challenge yourself
  • Please be careful with grammar in future presentations

Assignment 6: Classroom Management

Classroom environment - notes from our facetime conversation (Shauna, Melinda & Darcy)
  • abusive student attitudes and behaviours
    • entitled students, rude opinions
    • introduce the other persons perspective
    • direct communication to students
    • single out student vs. talking to them individual
    • review rules and regulations (signed contract)
    • offensive language
    • abusive language
    • problem clothing
    • facebook bullying....outside the classroom; talk to them individually
    • college policies...last resort (expulsion)
  • achieving diversity and cooperation
    • enrollment may be out of our hands
    • like people often navigate and make cliques or groups
    • assign groups or mix up students all the time
    • international student centre and other supports
    • must speak english in class
    • international students are a positive; raise the bar academically (ECE)
  • managing interruptions
    • don't get to pick your clients...don't get to pick your

    • walk over to students/ work the room
    • negative attitude can bring other students down
    • relies on other students who want to learn to become leaders
  • social and emotional factors
    • asbergers students (no filter) can be rude....but diversity and inclusiveness is critical to the program
    • huge group of students with support....attention deficit diagnosed earlier
    • more emotions with women involved
    • life situation (death, depression, etc...) can occur must be acknowledged and accommodated
    • teach empathy
    • treat others the way you want to be treated
  • gender and race issues
    • very few men

    • - To what extent do you believe that the gender of the teacher or the student influences the selection of classroom rules? Provide an example.
    • younger women as a teacher...challenges roles in some ethnicity/cultures
    • older men didn't have to do the same education, training as we have now. Maybe don't recognize how newer generation females are achieving the same accreditation/ levels of work
    • more empathetic to ones own gender perhaps

Each student is to list one situation on your own wiki page with solutions to the "problem"

Problem: Students smoking e-cigarette in greenhouse.
Solution: Check with school policy regarding smoking on campus....it does not directly address "e-cigarettes". Not sure whether to support this quitting smoking behavior or refuse. This issue will have to be addressed in school rules, as its becoming more common. Be consistent regarding in class rules.

Assignment # 7 Student Centered Approaches in my curriculum

shared with Eva in google drive

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1mmQTLcuMn0yxDXtZO45NAr8tyh2T8maA1vKnUaOpaQ8/edit#slide=id.p

Hussam:
  • I enjoy the idea of using simulations to build confidence in students
  • I am happy that you are open to learning....have a great trip to China!

Wendy:
  • Mind mapping with the "cheat sheets" in Lucid map is a great idea
  • I suggest that you continuously evaluate your own learning experience and apply it to your own teaching

Cynthia:
  • Perhaps try to make your slides less content heavy...they are very difficult to read
  • webquest as a collaborative learning tool is a great idea

JerryLynn:
  • I like the idea of the Lucid chart for anatomy
  • However in student centered learning you should avoid saying statements such as " I put all the info in for them"

Vanessa:
  • I really appreciated that your task of setting up the learning environment was to be evaluated by the children the space is intended for. (In my industry they are called post occupancy evaluations...and can really offer a lot of information as to how successful or perhaps not so successful the space was designed)
  • It would have been nice to know how you elicit responses from preschool children?

Sajjad:
  • i'd be very curious to see how successful the flipped classroom would be. Horticulture teachings are certainly available online.
  • I'm curious how you would motivate the students to participate?

Day 2

Jenna S:
  • Way to explore the graphic organizer and figure it out after it did not work for you in class
  • Please work on your concluding statement...."That is it" could be wrapped up more effectively (summary, demonstrate, encourage growth points)

Kelly:
  • I enjoyed the fact that you engage your students in discussions of current topics such as body image
  • was a little confused as to why you were including additional information for those viewing later...they too shall be viewing your presentation? Try not to make confusing statements
  • enjoyed your reflections at the end. Great conclusion

Amanda
  • I really like how you brought an analysis of your own past teaching experiences (positive and negative) in to establish a platform to grow from.
  • watch your language/ conclusion " more fun enough?"

JennaB
  • I like the idea of blog journaling their clinical experience...especially because they are all spread out; however there should be a little more guidance/framework.
  • Please be careful watch your use of crutch words....lots of "umm'' and "uh's"

Shauna
  • very confident and knowledgeable about your craft.
  • I wonder if a website instead of a blog would be better for portfolio?

Cara
  • not sure if it was your phone connection....but your volume was very low and difficult to hear. Please be sure you are speaking into your speaker
  • surprised to hear you have incorporated interior design into the assignment....seems like a very big and broad topic, perhaps this could be broken down into smaller components.
  • I like the idea of utilizing wiki and or blogs to motivate your grade 12 students

Melinda
  • Please be careful watch your use of crutch words....lots of "umm'' and "uh's"
  • great to go in and analyze your course content....can really see what will be student centered learning
  • Role playing really sounds as though it would bring forward a lot of options and tools for ECE's to utilize in real life scenarios.

Len
  • I enjoyed that you shifted tedious information into an ownership based activity. (what don't you know about your own car?) Really making them take interest.
  • Great that you reviewed and summarized. Good conclusion. Perhaps using key words of the prezi and not reading word for word from slides would make it more dynamic
