Laurie Why did Laurie choose LEARN to deliver her course materials? Great speaker and great presentation, no negative comments.
Doris Are there a few different types of violen? Doris presented a great presentation but it was very lengthy.

Assignment 4: Classroom Management
What is classroom management? It is the process of ensuring the classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students.
How does it affect my instruction?Effective teaching and learning cannot take place in a poorly managed classroom. If students are disorderly and disrespectful and there are no rules and procedures to guide behavior, chaos becomes the norm.
How does it affect student learning? In these situations, instructors struggle to teach, and students learn with much less than they should. In contrast, well-managed classrooms provide an environment in which teaching and learning can flourish.
Influences of technology in the 21th century classroom. Employing technologies in the classroom to assist teaching and learning more engaging and encouraging students to create, communicate, and collaborate in ways never before possible.
Abusive student attitudes and behaviours. When i have aggressive students with bad behaviors in my program. I don’t confront them face-to-face on a lot discipline issues. I would start a case log (attendance, late assignments, failing grades, etc) for the bad behavior student. I would use the College policies (attendance, failing grades, aggression, etc.) to handle the bad behaviour student. Most of the time, the bad behaviour students are expelled from the program. Management Interruptions. When a student interrupts me or my lecture, it’s easy to fall into the trap of answering or responding to the interruption. By doing so, will grant permission to any students to barge in whenever the mood strikes. When a student cuts me off in mid-sentence, it’s best not to say a word. Instead, stand in place and make calm but steady eye contact. There is no need to glare, sigh, or make obvious frustration.
Gender and race issues. Race issues in the classroom stem from generalizations and stereotypes and are typically found in older adult students. I currently have a few international students in my program who are trying to fit in with other Canadian born students. Some Canadian born students are not thrill with the recent wave of Chinese and East Indian international students in colleges. I tried to pair or group the international students with the Canadian born students to work on lab and projects. So far, i haven’t had any racial issues with these students in my classroom.
Social and emotional factors that affect student engagement and motivation to learn. These elements have an impact on learning. For example, when students lack social and emotional connections to learning, educators, schools, and their classmates, it often leads to behavior issues or disengagement, which leads to declining achievement. I tried to connect with these students on a more personal basis to find out more about their family life, background, friends, interests, etc. Some of these students have improve their social skills with their classmates over time and some have dropped out of my program. I have tried to connect with these students more than the other students to motivate and engage them in their learning.
Sugata Mitra: The Child-Driven Education
I really enjoyed this video. Mr.Sugata Mitra tackled one of the greatest problems in education which is teachers and schools do not exist where they are needed the most (third world countries). In his experiments from New Delhi, he gave unprivileged kids self-supervised access to the internet and saw results that could change how we think about teaching. I wish the students in developed countries would understand and appreciate the tools they have to assist them in learning.
Assignment 7: How to use learner-centered approaches in my teaching.
The three learner-centered approaches that i will use to improve the learning of my students are: Cooperative Learning, Learning Centers, and Problem-Based Learning & Inquiry Learning.
Cooperative Learning: It involves small groups of students working together to solve a problem or to complete a task. All students in the group must actively participate. The success of the group depends on the input of each individual. This method promotes active participation, students' ability to work together, and improvement of social skills.
Objectives: I usually lecture the topic of transistors to my students. The students will use the computers in the classroom to research the theory and applications of transistors. They will be given a criteria for the research and have 3 classes to complete the task. They will be given a criteria for their research. They will share their findings among the other in a group. If there are missing information during the group discussion than i will give them feedback at the end of the class.
Outcomes and Evaluation: This learning method promotes independent study, information sharing, and he students to work together and to improve their social skills. The students must complete the task to the satisfaction of the instructor or to the specified criteria. The students will be graded based on their participation in the group, information sharing, and be ready to answer questions from the instructor.
Learning Centers:It involves students work independently or in small groups to complete a task or group discussion. Instructor can present questions/problems/worksheets/web-search where students perform hands-on learning or research a topic on the internet.
Objectives: For the topic of motor controls in my program, I will wire multiple motor control circuits with inserted faults for the students to troubleshoot. students can troubleshoot the circuit independently or in a pair. Students will be given a criteria for troubleshooting, find and document the faults, complete the task in 2 classes. Students will share their findings with me when they complete the task.
Outcomes and Evaluation: This learning method promotes students to work independently or in groups to complete hands-on learning. Students must be able to find all inserted faults in the circuit. Methods of troubleshooting must be documented and explain in details. Students will be graded based on their troubleshooting skills and their documentation. Students must be ready to answer questions from the instructor.
Problem-Based Learning & Inquiry Learning: The instructor giving the students a problem where inquiry must be utilized to solve the problem. There are four common steps in this method: 1) students receive the problem. 2) students gather data or information. 3) students organize data and attempt an explanation to the problem. 4) students analyze the strategies they used to solve the problem.
Objectives: For the section of electronic mathematics review in my program, i will hand out a math review package for the students to review and complete. Students can use the internet to search for equations/steps in solving a problem/steps in using a scientific calculator to solve for a problem. Students will have 5 classes to complete the package. Individual work is encouraged but students can also help the other if required.
Outcomes and Evaluation: This learning method promotes problem-based learning where inquiry must be utilized to solve technical mathematical problems. In the past, i used to mark the packages upon completion from the students, it was too much work. From now on, each student will take turn to demonstrate the steps of solving a question from the package. Students will be graded based on their participation in group discussion, steps in solving a question, and the ability to demonstrate the procedure of solving a technical problem question.

Randy I don't know much about Randy's program to have comments. His approaches to teaching or flipping the classroom can be successful.
Dan What was Dan's conventional method of teaching?
Laurie Lori's presentation is clear and right to the point, great presentor. Mitch What were the conventional methods of teaching? What are the learner-centered approaches?
Jennifer I like the idea of students selecting their own final projects to complete for graduation without interference from the instructor. Ken Does flipping the classroom create more questions from the students than the conventional method of teaching? Alan What are the standards and criteria for evaluating the students from the instructor? Andrea no comment for Andrea, great presentation, very passionate about her teaching and program.
March 5, 2014 Doris Will the instructor visit the work practicum students in person for visual evaluation. Great learning outcomes for each learning approache. Maggie L. Great idea for interacting on-line games to teaching. Software simulation is more interactive for learning than learning from a textbook. Amanda i think the videos should improve students learning because of visual learning instead of trying to remember a demonstration from the instructor.
Jason Webquest is a great learner-center approach for culinary students to research and learn a new dishes around the world.
Rick What are the learning outcomes for the first student-center approach?
Tony Doris brought up a great point, video taping yourself for the purpose of teaching and demonstration is a great idea.
Tom What are the chances the students will use the popplet to fill out the course evaluation. Using a popplet is a student- center approach?
