Classroom Management
Discussed with Kelly and Jenna B

My challenging situation not necessarily one student but a number of high needs students. By high needs I mean some with social and or emotional issues and some students with needs which seem above and beyond what the college offers for support.

Early Childhood Education is a field where inclusion is worn like a badge of honor. Many children come into centers and receive care that meets their specific learning needs. Children with a variety of additional support needs participate in programs adapted to include them in all possible ways. For the most part, our education system allows for inclusion and adapted programs continue throughout high school.

Once they've completed high school, those same students enroll in college programs expecting (and deserving) the same adaptations. But I feel that as an institution we really do not have the services here on campus to meet the demand, nor the range of needs we are seeing in our classrooms. It leaves instructors trying to accommodate additional questions, repeatedly explain material, and at times overlook those students who could be challenged by higher level discussion, to support the needs of a few high need students. Although our ECE faculty regularly connects students to tutoring, academic support, & counseling, in some cases it is really not enough. Plus the question of how these students might "realistically" transition to the work environment is not being addressed in any college services that I am aware of.

Assignment 3 Inquiry Presentations

Mahi - I appreciate the parallels you drew between design software to use in your work and the pattern software found on the web. It built on your original understanding. It speaks to our efforts to construct our learning. You were very sequential in your presentation and it's very easy for the listener to follow.
One constructive criticism I could offer is be aware of the occasional umms and ohhs as you move from one piece of info to another. I find myself doing the same.

Wendy - Excellent discussion above and beyond the framework on the presentation slides. Very well prepared. Clear layout of the info. What I loved is seeing you compare and analyze 3 recipies in your process.
The only constructive criticism I could offer is bring some next time...even if it falls. Like you sad it's chocolate, we will eat it!

Amanda - The cautious enthusiasm you shared in your presentation was very honest. That struck a chord with me since I have appreciation for, but difficulty with incorporating technology into my teaching. Excellent assessment of who are students are re: enough is enough. I cannot think of a constuctive criticism.

Jerrylynn - The parallels that you drew between the parts of the eye and the photo technology terms really helped to clarify the terms for your audience. You have a clearer understanding of your students through this process. That empathy in teaching is important. Your detailed learning speaks to the depth of learning that can occur through inquiry based projects.

Kelly & Melinda - Your thoughts on social learning have me considering not only our specific learning outcomes in the course, but the other social learning that occurs. Students could gain benefit from one another's strategies, questions, habits, and just getting to know one another on a deeper level. Their connections build confidence and a sense of community. In that community comes greater knowledge and students making the work their own. Your group work clearly indicates how fun learning can be!

Sajjad - You have clearly learned the access program given the examples provided in your presentation. It seems like a complicated management system but your understanding speaks to the motivation of the learner.
One constructive criticism would be to offer a sequential process to the presentation for the audience. It would ensure clarity for your listeners

Cara - Fantastic effort a learning a new tool for learning and presenting. You have accessed tools within power point that I don't think I have even used, I use the program all the time.
Constructive criticism would be to trust yourself in tech tasks. I say that knowing I have to trust myself too.

Husam-
I like how you gave us a direction for the presentation...to reflect on our practice. Enjoyable engaging presentation style Husam.
You seem to have planned a lot to present in the time available. It's unfortunate that you didn't have more time to complete all parts of your presentation.

Darcy - You offer a very sequential and easy to understand presentation. Your prezi was clear and easy to follow. I would have liked to see how you connect this project to your working with your students. Careful with spelling.

Jenna S - I think your self reflection on your frustration was a meaningful lesson for all of us as instructors dealing with the learning frustrations of our students. What support can we offer on that journey. Good connections to previous presentations.

Jenna B - You seemed well prepared to discuss your learning process. Your efforts to connect with Jenna's presentation reinforced your points. As a teacher in a classroom, that technique would support the student participation in class.

Shauna - Your findings seemed to speak to the varied needs of our learners. It was really beneficial to consider that.
Careful with grammar and spelling in your presentation. (Last two items in "findings")

Vanessa - Re-focus, especially with multiple options for learning, is a very important lesson. As facilitators in the classroom we may need to offer students the tools to know when and how to re-focus in their learning journey.
Try not to repeat yourself in your wrap up.

Leonard - I am impressed by your motivation in not only wrangling your difficult learning process in Arduino as well as taking on a second challenge with trees.
A constructive criticism perhaps would be to be aware of spelling and grammar in your presentation

Assignment #7 Student Centered Approaches Presentations

Husam - I appreciate your efforts to quell student fears of not knowing a topic by using a simulation which offers the right answer. Then they can work through the problem with some level of certainty.
I do not have a criticism Husam but in relation to Eva's comments re worksheets etc...perhaps blogging or discussion board to substitute for worksheets?

Wendy - Interesting to see you using flipped classroom with Chemistry. I was wondering how very concrete topics could utilize some student centered approaches. Great application Wendy! Your mind mapping discussion re: your cheat sheet example was wonderful.

Jerrylynn - The student centered approaches you've chosen offer a lot of opportunity to think critically and analyze their information independently.
I was considering mind mapping as well. After your discussion I would like mine to be a dynamic class doc that grows as knowledge grows vs review doc at the end. Thanks Jerrylynn.

Vanessa - Great ideas that build on each other Vanessa. I like the Idea of KWL chart. When I think of using it, I feel as though it should be completed for earlier LOs, like you've done. Once we understand what they have learned, I would want to ensure I have time to help the students fill in the blanks.

Sajjad - Analyzing signs and symptoms of stress/environmental conditions through tasks such as a web quest would be a great way to build the knowledge in the students. They become critical thinkers and trouble shooters in real situations.

Darcy - "Student ownership" through choosing webinars on design ideas offers an opportunity for independent thought and creativity in your students.

Jenna S
Great prezi...straight forward and eye-catching. I wish I could have heard the presentation on the day you presented!

Shauna Offering a flipped classroom experience allows more time for practical experience (nails). This is my hope as well for utilizing a flipped classroom. All the best in accomplishing that.

Cara (no link)

Melinda Clear neat prezi! The use of Role play for guiding will be an excellent way for students to prepare for their work and apply their knowledge.
