Assignment #6 Classroom management

I have recently started teaching grade nine and ten Hairstyling at a high school in Brandon. The eight years prior I taught hairstyling at a independent school in Brandon. The average age was 17-25 years ,so with the older age there was more maturity and commitment. I have a couple of grade ten students who choose to skip class. They are in the school but just do not show up for class. I have hunted them down and brought them to class numerous times and so has the principle. I have contacted parents and all will be good and then it starts again. I am out of ideas. These students have missed valuable assignments, reviews and tests. Anyone have any suggestions?

Assignment # 3 Inquiry Based Learning " Learn to do something"

Mahi- Good for you sewing is not a easy task to learn. You definitely did your research . It is amazing what you can find on the internet. I checked out the pattern maker, it is very helpful. I would love to se the end result with you removing sleeves and adjusting the neck are. I did a lot of sewing when my kids were younger and I know those patterns can be hard to follow, Good job!

Amanda- I guess I should have made the trip to Winnipeg, sounds like you guys got to feast. I love how you relate everything to your learners. How can I make this easier for someone else to learn. It was like layers of learning and I agree you have to do something more than once to retain. Those biscuits are great warm with honey.

Jerrylynn- I am still not sure what DSLR is??? There sure was a lot to learn and good for you to do it, it sounds very technical. The pictures were good to see for comparison. I think I will stick to aim and shoot. You show a lot of interest and I am sure you will keep playing while you learn.

Wendy- Not only did you try different recipes for Souffle, you have a lot of knowledge. I liked how you tried well known "chefs" recipes and then a unknown. Sometimes easy is better. I thought adding the cost per serving was a added touch, not everyone wants to or can afford to by fancy ingredients.

Melinda/Kelly- Awesome perogies, This is very time consuming but soooo good. Your presentation was fun but easy to follow. I liked how you related how you learned on how you might teach it to others.

Sajjad- Sounds like you put a lot of research into this presentation. There was a lot of technical information. I did find it very hard to follow and way above my head. For me I would have to be seeing what you were doing and doing it myself.

Jenna B - Income Tax Is scary stuff, but you can save a lot of money if you can do it on your own. The manual ( paper) is much more time consuming and you have to use your brain. Ha ha ha....I do feel it doesn't hurt to know a little something about taxes, after all it is about our money .I have been using Turbo Tax for the past four or five years. Very simple to use and you just enter numbers and the program does the rest. There is a direct link right to Canada Revenue, so you can efile it. Its great.

Cynthia - I really loved your presentation on wine making and hats off to you for giving it a whirl. I am not a big wine drinker, but I found it interesting. There does sound like it can be technical with specific gravity. You talked about the emotional connection and that allows us to relate to others whether it be fear or anxiety. We all have fear when it comes to taking on something new. Inquiry based projects are good for those who like to research on their own.

Shawna- This is my expertise! You are quite right, doing hair on yourself is harder than doing it on someone else. Its awkward ,hard on the arms and we cant see the whole head. Putting in hot rollers is far easier than using a iron and safer. Good job!

Vanessa- After seeing you try the guitar, I am not sure I would try. I would lose my patients.I also would try other things if I was not successful the first time around. A lesson learned, you really need to give something a fair chance before trying another avenue. Having various teaching methods is good so all have a chance to succeed because not all learners will learn the same way.

Leonard- Omg I was so pumped when you explained what you were attempting to do. I have no idea what interfacing the arduino to a vehicle is, but it sounded exciting. You most definitely got wrapped up in the project. Hats off to you to even know where to start and I have no doubt that you will figure it out. I think you needed to do the grafting of the tree just to keep your sanity. I wish I knew about the grafting a few years ago, we had a ornamental choke cherry tree that was not doing well and we cut it down. Your research was good and instruction was easy to follow.

Assignment #7 Learning Centered Approaches

Husam- I like the simulation , the students actually get to built and find the answer themselves. The case study or trouble shooting is also a good way to learn. It seems to be very much hands on. I agree that we have to introduce new teaching methods to keep students engaged.

Wendy- I am not sure I fully understand a flipped classroom? You are very good at what you do and you have exceptional ideas. I get the impression that if you had a learner that was struggling you would find a way for that learner to excel

Cynthia- You really state about making the learning real. Discussions boards is a good way for others to learn from others. Students may pick up solutions this way.

Jerrylynn- Wow you actually implemented some of these learning approaches. Good for you. That is a good idea to block images until you participate too. This way all students benefit and do the work to. I like the web quest idea We can dictate what we want and the students can do the research.

Vannessa- So you want the students to create a floor plan on how they would set up their facility.... Ok I get it. Blogs are good maybe get more interaction and new ideas.....I take it this is a fairly new course and your still feeling it out.

Sajjad- I really like the idea of blogs. I think students will be able to share a lot of information on projects, assignments, etc. They learn from each other. Inquiry learning or problem based learning, the students need to do the research and find the solution. Very well thought out Sajjad.

Darcy- BYOD bring your own device, that is awesome. Having a app so they can research on their own. I think that approach would be inquiry? Interesting Webinars. Choice is good , they can pick what interest them so there is more motivation. It seems blogs are being used a lot or going to be used.

Presentations: Assignment #7

Jenna S- Nail Tech Instructor Graphic organizer is a excellent idea to learn the tools and there uses.
Role playing is always a good way to teach communication skills. Peer evaluation is good , gets students to actually pick up on mistakes. Great job!

Kelly- Early childhood Education, The role playing is excellent to learn how to make a difficult situation easier. Communication Skills. Video could be fun. Discussions are always good, a lot of opinions and new ideas are presented. Your presentations is excellent a lot of thought was put into it.

Amanda- Technical Communication, working with animals create your own clinic or animal shelter, that is a awesome idea and exciting. Giving students options is good, they feel like they can choose .Trial and error, I think it would work.

Jenna B- X-rays- Flipping the classroom would be a excellent idea, on their own time and as often as needed, if something was missed or unclear. Sometimes they may not do it? I love graphic organizing, it has helped a lot in my teaching and is a much easier study guide for the students. I think blogging will really take off in a lot of courses.

Shauna- Nail technology, Video on gels for flipped class is a excellent idea, good reference for students. More time for practical work. Once the demo is done it can be reused, such a time saver. Blogging is such a good idea for their portfolio, we hairstylist have to do a portfolio too, I may try this.

Cara-

Melinda- Early Childhood Education, Role playing, seeing and doing are different so role play is good to work out specific situations and definitely would work well in your class. Story telling, would that be similar to blog or a journal? Portfolio would be good, video.

Len- Automotive Repair, Doing Information retrieval with computer, would it save a lot of time? Eliminate paperwork? Journal video, photo and sharing with the other students is good, then can learn from each other . It is always nice to get different ideas or information not just from teacher but from peers.
